Development of medical information science competences for English-speaking foreign students at the Department of Medical and Biological Physics and Medical Informatics

Abstract

At the Department of Medical and Biological Physics and Medical Informatics of the Kharkiv National Medical University the discipline "Medical Informatics" is taught to English-speaking foreign students (over 1000 students), as well as to the state language students, on the second year. Recently, the department reoriented the teaching methodology from a knowledge-based approach to a competence (knowledge-based plus practical skills) one, that is a condition of modernization and bringing its results in accordance to international standards. Competence approach not only makes the student aware, but also determines the development of skills to solve problems that arise in real situations. Earlier in the department this discipline was taught exclusively in the form of seminars. Currently, students' training is carried out in four computer classrooms in the form of computer practical works.
